How are power cables treated for waterproofing and what are their typical waterproof structures? New Baofeng decomposes several waterproof structures commonly found in power cables for you:

How are power cables waterproofed? What are the typical waterproof structures? Xinbaofeng analyzes for you several common waterproof structures of power cables:

1. For single-core cables, the insulating barrier layer of the cable is wrapped with a semiconductive resistor for water resistance, and the surface of the metal barrier layer is wrapped with a general water barrier. Then the outer sheath is extruded. The outer sheath material can be ordinary PVC, or HDPE material with radial water blocking function, etc., depending on other performance requirements of the cable.

For three-core cables, in order to ensure sufficient contact between the metal barriers, only a single-conductor waterproof layer is wrapped around the surface of the insulating barrier, and there is no outside of the metal barrier. Then around the water-blocking belt, depending on the waterproof performance requirements, the compensation can be normal compensation or water-blocking compensation. The inner lining layer and outer sheath materials are as mentioned in single-core cable.

2. The aluminum-plastic composite layer is longitudinally wrapped inside the outer sheath or lining layer to act as a waterproof layer

3. Extrude HDPE outer sheath on the outside of the cable.

For XLPE insulated cables above 110kV, metal sheaths are mainly used to make the cables meet waterproof requirements. The characteristic of the metal sheath is that it is completely impermeable, so cables with metal sheaths have very good radial water blocking performance. The main types of metal sheaths include: hot-pressed aluminum sleeves, hot-pressed lead sleeves, welded corrugated aluminum sleeves, welded corrugated steel sleeves, cold-drawn metal sleeves, etc.
